Last Month
|
Our last meeting was our first guest artist night since before Covid. This night featured guest artists Helen Rich and Walter Perrie. Helen and Walter were due to play for us as Covid hit the UK which caused the closure of the club venue just prior to their appearance, so this months concert was a concert delayed by several years! The night started with Harvey Seager playing Mexically
Rose, I’ll be your sweetheart, Sloop John B, Make Me An Island and Delilah. Colin Dunsombe played Michelle, Teddy Bears Picnic and Those Were the Days. Ann Parker played Frog Chorus, Snow Waltz and Loveliest Night Of The Year. Our Andrew Batty (Age 6 for those that don’t know him) then played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star while reading the tune from his childrens music book. Walter and Helen then took to the stage for this first appearance, they started with Sharpshooters March and Lucie E Ombre.
The fantastic playing continued with Hungarian Dance, Autum Leaves, Dantesque, Reine De Musette, and then on to a Set Of Scottish Marches with Walter on the accordion and Helen switching instruments to play the Violin. The music continued on two accordions with Sweet Maid of Glendaruel, Mount Stuart House, Elsey’s Watlz & Endearing Charms. Then Helen did a solo performance of Shake A Leg, then Walter gave us a Solo performance of Return to Sorrento and Funiculi Funicula. Their first
half ended with the pair playing Orcadian Sunrise and Bel Viso. We then had the break and plenty of chat going on before we returned for the second half of the night with Rob Howard from Stockport playing Sakkiaven Polka and, at Walters request, his Allo Allo set. Our next player was Colin Dunscombe playing Blue Moon, Putting On The Ritz, My Favourite Things and I Could Have Danced All Night. Before our guest artists returned to the stage we heard Colin Ensor playing Please Don’t Talk About Me
When I’m Gone and Charmaine. Walter and Helen then took to the stage and started their second spot of the night with Under The Double Eagle, Pigalle, The Lambeth Polka, Bourassque, La Vie En Rose, Under Paris Skies, and Beautiful Days. Helen then swapped her accordion for the violin while her and Walter played Danny Boy. Walter then sat back while Helen played La Mer solo, Walter then gave us Figaros Aria before Helen joined him again to play Dancing Fingers. Walter then gave us a
nice rendition of Westering Home with Helen on violin, followed by Liverpool Sands, Loch Lomond, Northern Lights Of Old Aberdeen and finally, to finish the night at 11pm, Scotland The Brave. This had been an excellent concert with fantastic performances from both our guest artists and from our supporting players too. I heard many good comments about the night as everyone was leaving.
Hopefully we don’t leave it so long in future before we see Walter and Helen playing again. David Batty
