Our August Concert
Our August concert started with David Rigby playing Loveliest Night Of The Year and Snow Waltz. Our next player was Bernard Belshaw playing How Wonderful To Know, Blaze Away, Just The Way You Look Tonight, Overhead the Moon is shining, Funicule Funiculi, I Don't Know Why, Stone In Love With You, Jealousy and Lets Face The Music And Dance. We were then treated to two very funny monologues from Albert Draper, these were called The Italian and Wake Week In Wigan. It was back to accordion music with Colin Ensor playing Down Forget Me Not Late, Conquest Of Paradise, Whispering Grass, Sweet Dreams, The Town That I Loved, Cest La Fiesta and Sweetheart Of All My Dreams. To lead us up to the break we heard Bill Agnew (pictured) playing What Do Want To Make Those Eyes At Me For, For Me And My Girl, Red River Valley, Forever Blowing Bubbles, Blue Tango, Snow Waltz,  Mocking Bird Hill and Cuckoo Waltz. During the break we had plenty of chat happening around the room, it was a shame to stop it, but we had many more players lined up so we started the second half with  Rebecca Parker  playing Coming Home, Home On The Range, Moon River and Zingarella. Rebeccas mun, Ann Parker then took her place on stage and played Snow Waltz, The Harry Lime Theme, Frog Chorus, Bel Viso, Corrine and Beautiful Days. Taking to the stage with his melodion, Graham Driver played Much Wenlock, Weasel's Revenge, Jaqueline Waltz, Carolines Waltz, Strike The Bell, Lovely Nancy, Portobello Horn Pipe and Bonnets o' Blue. It was almost time to finish the night now, so I used some of the available time to play Alpine Breezes, Return to Sorrento, Blackpool Belle and Fleur De Paris. It was now time for Bill Agnew to finish the night with Let Him Go Let Him Tarry, Blaydon Races, Irish Washerwoman, Your Cheatin' Heart, Harvest Home, No Regrets, La Vie En Rose, Anchors Aweigh, Dixie, Zippedy Do Dah, Marching To Georgia, Apple Blossom Time, You Always Hurt The One You Love, Daisy, Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Music Music Music, Pretty Baby, California Here I Come, Swanee and Show Me The Way To Go Home.

This Wednesday
This Wednesday is our Guest Artist Night with Tom Cowing and Cynthia MacKenzie. Tom played for us last year and was one of the players I have been asked to bring back soon, so here he is, I hope you can support his performance. Please Remember to bring any friends or family for a good night out, it would be nice to increase the number of people enjoying our concerts.  The Doors open at 7.30 for an 8pm start. If you get there early you can have a good chat with other people prior to the start of the club. If you see someone you haven't met before then please say hello to them, they will probably be quite pleased that someone came over to speak to them. Remember, if you have an accordion, sheet music or anything accordion related to sell then our concert nights are an ideal night to bring them along and possibly make a sale.

See you there...  David Batty

Tommy was a war vetran and served in Jamaica, Egypt, Shanghai and India between 1925 and 1932, he then signing up again for the Second World War in 1939 and fought in Europe. Entente Accordiale
by Steve Roxton
Having had a keen interest in all things "French Musette" from an early age in my accordion career, the e-mail that landed in my in-box, grabbed my attention like no other could. "How would I like to meet the Queen?" As the e-mail was from Jean-Pierre Marie, accordionist  and biographer to Andre Verchuren, it was written in French and referred to "La Reine de l'Accordeon", Yvette Horner. As my wife Maggie and I had already planned a working visit to Jersey and Normandy, with a stay in Paris to follow, I replied by return. The invitation  also included  my friend, French accordionist, Jean Dauvin with whom I have recorded a CD, and appeared with, both in England and France. On a beautiful summer evening in August, we assembled, along with our family members, in a private suite at the gourmet restaurant,  Pavillon Montsouris, situated in the 14th arrondisement. Yvette was accompanied by the impresario & film maker, Jean-Pierre Brun. and on their arrival,  we presented her with a gift of flowers.   Jean and I, being the principal guests,  were then duly seated on either side of the great lady. The food was superb and  between courses we  had the opportunity to talk about our respective careers, techniques and to discuss the merits of our chosen instrument in the world today. The career of this remarkable lady has spanned many years, and her biography in collaboration with Jean-Pierre Brun and Jacques E. Deschamps "Le Biscuit dans la Poche" published by Editions du Rocher, tells of her rise to world-wide fame. For your readers here is a brief resume of her career.
Yvette Horner Queen of the Accordion From an early age in her native town of Tarbes in the Pyrannese, Yvette had one love above all else, music. She excelled at piano starting at the age of four. However despite being a child prodigy, her mother Rosy, realised that brilliant pianists in the 1920 were plentiful but there were no female accordionists. So began the transition from Mozart & Chopin on the piano, to the dance music of the day on accordion. After some seven years of intense musical training which she had done at the conservatory in Toulouse for piano, at the age of eleven she began to transfer all this talent to the accordion, finding it, as many of us do, an instrument capable of playing not only dance music but classics, jazz and numerous other genres of music. Making her name as a soloist  in the South of France she went on to forming small orchestras for "Bal Musette" evenings and toured throughout France with a concert party. In 1948 she won the Coupe Mondiale. Four years later seated on top of a Citroen Tractor and dressed in sombrero , she played for the arrival of "The Tour de France" cycle race. This continued for 11 consecutive years when she followed the race on its stages around France. Her discography covers 150 titles with worldwide sales of more than 30 million. Her appearance at the Bastille for the bi-centennial of the revolution with Quincy Jones and the National Jazz Orchestra was a rousing success, and a year later in 1990, dressed by Jean-Paul Gaultier she starred in a revue at The Casino de Paris. For her great contribution to French culture she has been made both "Commandeur of the Legion of Honour" and Commandeur of the Order of Merit. In spite of all her achievements she remains, the most charming of people, interested in anyone who shares her love of music and the accordion. At the end of the evening Jean and I were presented with copies of her book in which she says again and again, 'To be a true musician you need to live and breath it every day, and never cease to work at it.'  We left the restaurant in high spirits after such a memorable evening, and were treated by Jean-Pierre Marie to a whistle stop tour of " Paris by night". Back home a fortnight later another e-mail was in my in-box. Yvette's manager Jean-Pierre Brun informed us that she was absolutely thrilled with the special evening that had been arranged for her to meet Jean and myself, and had said we were both most charming.
Roxton & Dauvin tour A tour is being arranged for July 2012 between 18th and the 27th. Some nights are still available. A great opportunity for your members to enjoy this world champion accordionist. enquiries Steve Roxton 01642 316676 email: steve@steveroxton.co.uk
