Leyland Accordion Club - February 2013
David Vernon
Our January Concert

Our January Concert started with Colin Ensor playing Please, The Maigret Theme, Island Of Dreams and Charmaine. Sara Daly then took to the stage and played Fathers Waltz, Drunken Sailor and Santiagno. It was now time for our guest artist David Vernon to start his first half, his opening number was Romagnola Bella.  David continued with some Scottish pieces:- John McDonalds Farewell To Oban, The Breakdown and The Athol Highlanders. The music continued with Reproche which was followed by a Quick Short Story which contained 96 Beatles Titles! Back to playing the accordion David continued with The Godfather Theme and then a self written piece called Terminal 3 (It was given this title because he wrote it in Terminal 3 waiting for a plane). The accordion standard Bourrasque led us to  Voi Che Sapete.  We returned to Scottish music with The F Set, Wally Wilsons Waltz, John Stephen O Chance Inn, The Wind That Shakes The Piggery, Donald Ian Rankine, Jeans Reel and to take us to the break Jaqueline Waltz. David was chatting with many people in the break and selling his CD's. After the break I started the second half by playing Oslo Waltz, Barcarole and Sailors Hornpipe. I then left the stage and Bernard Bamber took over playing The Green Hills Of Antrim, Old Flames, Morningtown Ride, Do Ye Ken John Peel, Galway Shawl and Waltzing Matilda. Our next player was Ann Parker playing Chopsticks, Finger Polka and Spanish Eyes. There was just time for Graham Driver to entertain us, Graham played Weasel's Revenge, Jaqueline Waltz, Upton On Severn Stick Dance and Three Jolly Sheepskins. It was now time for our guest artist David Vernon to finish the night. David started his second half with Jerusalem, he then went in to a Scottish section which included Balmoral Highlanders. David continued with  Greenbank Hornpipe (which he wrote himself), Old Cambridge Hornpipe and a Polish Medley. After Farwell To The Fatherland we returned to Scotland with The Dark Island (David informed us that the proper title is Dr McKays Farewell To Craigory). It was now nearing the end of the night and time for some audience favourites to finish.  David played Roulette Wheel then the accordion favourites Dancing Fingers, Happy Hour Polka, Bel Viso and to finish the night he played The Flying Scotsman.  We enjoyed a great night of entertainment from David who had travelled down from Edinburgh and who travelled back the same night!  I have to thank him for making the journey even though we were going through a cold spell that put a few people off coming to the club. We have put  two videos on Youtube that were filmed on the night, visit www.youtube.com/accordiontv to see what you missed if you were not there.

The event regularly attracts well over two hundred different vehicles - from stream trucks and fire engines to vintage cars and bicycles.  The event is held in the streets of Fleetwood so no walking round fields. Club Membership

Thanks to all those who paid your club membership for 2013, as you know the membership runs from January to December.  Being a member gets you in to concert nights cheaper than non members and helps support the cost of guest artists, room hire, paper, stamps, email newsletter posting service subscription and any other costs associated with running the club.   I hope we can gain a few new members this year then we can afford more guest artists etc. If you know of anyone who might like to attend the club then please bring them down. I often get told by people who have heard of us that it was assumed that  you have to be an accordion player to attend the club. By bringing people along we can dispel that myth and hopefully get a few new members in the process.

Accordion Radio

On the Internet you can listen to accordion music by visiting www.accordionradio.co.uk which is broadcasting 24 hours a day. If you have two browser windows open or two tabs in one browser then you can listen to the music while you browse the internet, you don't need to stop the music to look at other pages on the Internet.

Club Stickers

We have stickers (available for free on any club night) for accordion cases and also ones that go in the back windows of cars that publicise the club and the fact that you are an accordionist. Just ask for one.
