Leyland Accordion Club - April 2014
Our March Concert

Our March Concert started with our own John Lennox playing Green Glens of Antrim, The Mountains Of Mourne, Biddy Mulligan, It's a Long Way to Tipperary, Skibberean, Slievenamon, Galway Bay, Isle Of Innisfree and Londonderry Air.  Our next player was Bernard Bamber playing Hello Dolly, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Que Sera Que Sera, Those Magnificent Men, Green Green Grass Of Home and She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain. It was now time for our Guest Artist Robert Burton  to start his first spot of the night. Robert started with his Acoustic Excelsior Accordion, his opening piece was Clarinet Polka, this was followed by  Corinne, A man and A Woman and Cubanola. Robert then moved to his MIDI Paulo Soprani Accordion.  After playing Funiculi Funicula, Robert started playing and singing South Of The Border, Drink Drink, Wooden Heart and Volare. Robert then continued with Bel Fiore, Besame Mucho, Crazy, Country Roads, Santa Lucia, Return to Sorrento and The Godfather Theme. After the Break I started the second half with Blackpool Belle and Fleur De Paris. Our next player was Sara Daly playing A Granddaughters Dream and Emma & Jamie's Wedding. Graham Driver then played a couple of tunes before Robert Burton started his second half with  Bel Viso and Radetski March. Singalong Song Books were then handed out to everyone in the audience, these contained all the words for the forthcoming tunes and were great for helping us sing the right words for the rest of the evening. Singing from the songsheet with Robert we continued the night with Mancamara's Band, Tulips From Amsterdam, Windmill In old Amsterdam, Wonderful Copenhagen, Que Sera, Sera, The Happy Wanderer, Roll Out The Barrel, Deep In The Heart Of Texas, Little Brown Jug, Knees Up, Mother Brown, Molly Malone, Those Were The Days, Lilli Marlene, She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain, I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside, All The Nice Girls Love A Sailor, I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts, I'm Enery The Eighth, Edelweiss, Are You Lonesome Tonight? Cock Linnet, Side By Side, You Made Me Love You, Shine on Harvest Moon, Daisy Daisy, Bless 'Em All, I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, Down At The Old Bull And Bush, My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean, Who Do You Think You Are Kidding Mr. Hitler?, Run Rabbit Run, The White Cliffs Of Dover, It's A Long Way to Tipperary, Pack Up Your Troubles and finally a rousing We'll Meet Again. In this concert we had enjoyed an instrumental first half, and a great singalong in the second half. Many people were commenting on what a great evening they had experienced, I promised them that we are definitely bringing Robert back in a year or two.

How One Woman organised 1,000 letters and 6,000 parcels to be sent to enlisted men in WW1

The Telegraph put out an interesting Article on the 8th April Here is a short extract from the Article. "Elizabeth Strouts set up a trust to organise the sending of letters and parcels to the local men serving around the world to keep up their morale and remind them their sacrifices were appreciated. In addition, she personally investigated every account of local men going missing in action and went to see those recovering from injuries, while also organising others to make such visits. By the end of the war - in which one in five enlisted men from her village (Great Chart in Kent) were killed - she had orchestrated the sending of some 5,921 parcels and 989 letters - including, one year, the despatching of 65 Christmas cakes around the globe. six months after the outbreak of war. Along with her sister, Margaret and other women from the village, she started collecting money from among the local community, with any sum accepted, in some cases as little as a halfpenny a week. During the course of the war a sum of £1246-1s-6d was raised - the equivalent of £85,725 today. The letters and parcels were sent not just to those fighting on the Western Front, but in every part of the world in which Great Chart men were serving. Every one received a letter each week. Those on the Western Front also received a weekly parcel, while those further away got one a fortnight. The parcels contained items like socks, writing paper, chocolate, and marmalade, as well as postcards of local views. On some occasions, soldiers made particular requests, with one even asking for an accordion to be sent." The Article never writes whether the soldier asking for an accordion received an accordion but the article makes for interesting reading. To read the whole article visit

Spotify

We wrote about Spotify when it was a few months old back in 2009. We have now decided to repeat the story with a few changes as most readers of our newsletter at that time were not on the internet. Spotify is a music streaming service giving you free access to music that you would otherwise have to pay for before you could listen to it. To use Spotify you visit www.spotify.com Download the Spotify software to your computer and create an account. You can then search Spotify's database of music, and stream tracks for free to your computer. Spotify's Free account is supported by the occasional short advert between Tracks, Spotify offer a Premium Account which costs £9.99 with the Premium account you don't have to listen to any adverts and you can also listen to music offline. At the time of writing a free account has no restrictions on how many times you can listen to a track or how much free music you can consume in a month, previously a free account was limited to 5 track plays and 20 listening hours a month. So you can now search Spotify for those unusual tracks that you haven't heard for ages and in case your wondering they do have accordion music on there. Spotify recently allowed Free Accounts to use their mobile application with a few restrictions, the mobile application is available on iOS and Android mobile phones, so you have access to a world of music via your phone.
