Our August Meeting was a meeting of two halves, the first half was players on the stage, then
we moved on to a free for all (practice night) format. We started the night with Bernard Bamber playing My Wild Irish Rose, Lovely Rose Of Clare, Isle Of Innisfree, Mcalpines Fusiliers, Irish Eyes, Wild Rover, Galway Girl and In The Mood. Ann Parker then took to the stage and played Memories Are Made Of This, Beautiful Days, Frog Chorus, Snow Waltz and Loveliest Night Of The Year. Our next player was Alan Prescott, he started with Island In The Sun. then continued with Isle Of
Capri, Yellow Bird, Funiculi Funicular, Alexanders Rag Time Band, I Belong To Glasgow and finished with Northern Lights Of Old Aberdeen. Colin Ensor was up next, Colin played Please Don’t Talk, Greatest Mistake Of My Life, Pigalle, More Than You Know, That Lovely Weekend, Sands Of Kuwait and Charmaine. Our last stage player was
Sara Daly who gave us I Don’t Want to Set The World On Fire and Grandaughters Dream.
The
floor was then open for anyone to play anything in any part of the room, chat, drink coffee, repair accordions, swap tips, help each other with music etc.
The night ended at the usual 11pm when they came to lock the place up and we all went home happy to be able to meet up again and listen (and play) live music.

Blackpool based Accordionist Ken Astin who had been ill for quite a while, died at the end of August after a long battle with Cancer. Ken was a guest artist for us at the club. Kens day job was as a consultant in the gas industry (pipelines across the country (not cookers or fires)) and he was an organist at Blackpool Tower. Ken was a fine musician who played Organ, Accordion, Bass Guitar and Piano to professional standards. Ken used to own his own business Astin Acoustics as a supplier of Technics organs, keyboards, amplifiers and speaker systems. Ken was also a private pilot who flew for 1500 hours around the country with organist Phil Kelsall. You can listen to Ken playing at Leyland on the following link… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdOjf2IUNdY

American Accordionist Weird Al Yankovic who found fame in
making Music Parodies on the Accordion has now had a film made about him. The Film has been described as “ a wildly satirical, highly nonfactual telling of Yankovic’s ascent from a geeky young accordionist to the beloved performer of hit songs like “My Bologna,” “Another One Rides the Bus” and “Eat It,” embellished with stories of sex, drugs and jungle combat that never really happened
to him. “I hope this confuses a lot of people,” Yankovic said
of “Weird,” which he wrote with the film’s director, Eric Appel. “We want to lead them down a path and think, Is this a real biopic? Is this the real story? The movie starts out pretty normal. Then it progressively goes way off the rails.” Daniel Radcliffe who played Harry Potter in the Harry Potter Films is playing the younger Weird Al. You can watch the Trailer for the film on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RyYZOtAxYKY
The Film will be available to watch on the 4th November on the Roku Channel which you can watch if you have a Roku Stick, You can also watch it on Sky Q and NOW
TV.
