Our November concert started with Arthur Frankland playing Midnight in Moscow and Fields Of Athenry. Up next was Colin Ensor, Colin started with Down Forget Me Not Lane, then continued with Seth Davy, The Maigret Theme and Back Home Again. It was now time for our guest artists The Fettlers to start their first spot of the night.
They opened with Banks Of The Roses and some Reels And Jigs. They then continued with The Last Thing On My Mind, The Vicar Of Chorley, Some Bugger From Yorkshire, Hillingar, Napoleon Bonaparte, Seth Davy, Snow In Summer, Peggy O’Neil, The Marino Waltz, Molly Malone, The Blackbird, Blackpool Belle (which they played for Tony Berry), and to finishe their first spot they played Reine De Musette. We had the break and the usual chat going on between everyone, then we settled down for the second half
of the night. This started with Bernard Belshaw playing Anema E Core, Blaze Away, Stranger In Paradise, Spanish Gyspy Dance, Ave Maria, This Is My Song, Tico Tico and Ain’t She Sweet. Our next player was Ann Parker who played Frog Chorus, Beautiful Days and Snow Waltz. It was almost time for our guest artists to return, so while they got ready I played Triste Sourire, Oslo Waltz and American Patrol. The Fettlers then returned to the stage for their second spot of the night. They started with
Whisky In The Jar and Dirty Old Town. Then Bryn (the guitar player) sang while they played Those Were The Days. The pace then changed with Kalinka, Bonnie Nancy, Highland Cathedral, Craic At Clashmore Hall, King Of The Road, Side By Side, Blue Bell Polka, Wild Rover, Lassie From Lancashire, Daisy, Ee By Gum and But I’m Tired.Bryn then played a solo of Folsom Prison Blues before they finished with Going Home.
The Fettlers are a class act with a fantastic entertaining mix of instrumentals, solos and songs. We had enjoyed a very entertaining night of music. We have arranged with The Fettlers to make a welcome return in November 2020. So if
you missed out you have another chance to see them.

This Wednesday - Christmas Party - Jacob Join
|
This Wednesday is our annual Christmas party. As usual this is a Jacobs Join. This is where we all bring a little something to eat, and we share it out amongst all those there. This has goine down great in the past with people bringing sandwiches, things on sticks, sausage rolls, pies, cakes, biscuits
or any general party food. Please bring along something, it doesn’t have to be a lot. We always enjoy a good meal on our Christmas night. This night is also a let your hair down night where people also share their other skills, any instrument goes on these nights and we usually have someone playing the electric piano, maybe the banjo will be in attendance, or any other instrument you can play. Maybe you can recite a monologue, play the Uillean Pipes, Tin whistle etc. We look forward to
hearing you on Wednesday. Once the food is set out the stage is open for people to organise themselves in to their own playing order. When someone finishes they feel free to take the next spot. If you are a nervous player then the best time to play is when the food has been uncovered, while most people are filling their plates up, it really is a good time to be on stage knowing most eyes are on the food, and not you. The night starts at 8pm but doors are always open for 7.30pm for a
chat before the concert starts. I look forward to seeing you there.

Accordion Course On The Isle Of Skye
|
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig are hosting a 5 day Accordion course from the 13th – 17th July 2020 the course is taught by Addie Harper and Richard Smith and costs £260. The following text is the write up of the course taking from the colleges website :-
In this 5 day course for all abilities, you will have the opportunity to learn tunes, techniques, harmonies and chords from Caithness virtuoso Addie Harper Jnr. Addie is in regular demand as a tutor and performer throughout Scotland and beyond, and he has become a firm favourite of the SMO Summer Short
Courses.
Addie hails from a renowned musical family, and those who take his course find he creates a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere, enjoying his calm instruction and patience and as such, he regularly draws students from all quarters. This year joining Addie as a support tutor is the incrediblytalented Richard Smith. Richard, a
full-time musician and fluent Gaelic-speaker from Wick, has been teaching music for 10 years, with over 20 years’ public performance experience. He is the musical director at the Wick Players and plays in several bands, including ’The Addie Harper Band’ and ‘The North Coast Fiddlers’. He also tutors regularly for Fèis air an Oir, Fèis Rois, Fèis Ghallaibh, and Fèis Chataibh, as well as the young trad band ‘Na Caileagan’.
We cannot wait to have them teaching with us in 2020!
As part of the course, students are expected to perform together at the Thursday night cèilidh at the College, and although some may find this daunting, Addie ensures that everyone, who wants to, can take part on stage with the group regardless of ability.
As this course runs the same week as the Button Box course at SMO with Fergie MacDonald, there will be plenty of opportunity to play with other box players and indeed a chance to hear three of Scotland’s finest musicians in a special night of music during the course week.
Visit http://www.smo.uhi.ac.uk/en/cursaichean/cursaichean-goirid/accordion-17-07-2019/ to find out how to book the
course and their Accommodation options.
